Edward Walter George

Edward Walter George
Edward Walter George, 67, died Saturday, December 28, 2013 at home with his family by his side. He was a native and lifelong resident of Savannah. He graduated from Savannah High School in 1964 and from Augusta College in 1972. He was High School All-Region, All-State, and All-American in Basketball. He played basketball and baseball at Augusta College where the basketball team went to the Nationals 2 years in a row.
He played 4 years of baseball at Augusta College where he led the team in homeruns, and RBI's. His regular position was an outfielder, but he did pitch occasionally, and his pitching record was 8 wins and no losses. Eddie was a winner. All of his coaches and teammates considered him the toughest competitor they had ever known.
He was honorably discharged from the United States Marine Corps. In 1973 Eddie was involved in an automobile accident and as a result was paralyzed from the waist down. He endured much during his life, but was always tough and had a great sense of humor. He always put his family first and stayed close to them all. Eddie would like to thank all the doctors, nurses, and caregivers for their efforts in taking care of him during the years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mrs. Gladys George and Mr. James Case George, junior. He is survived by one brother, Mr. James Jimmy Case George, III, of Savannah, one sister, Mrs. Sarah Charlotte Gol John, of Jacksonville, FL, and one uncle, Mr. Walter W. Matt Matthews Audrey, of Savannah.
Eddie is also survived by many close friends and numerous loving cousins, nieces, nephews, and grand- nieces and nephews.

GUEST BOOK

I've known Eddie for 53 years. Through the good times of riding to Augusta with Gladys and Jimmy from Statesboro to see Eddie play unselfishly and help lead his team to the NAIA Championship. From the first time I put Jelly on Grits, Eddie, Jimmy, Gladys and Sally made me feel at home, even though I might have been the first South Jersey person they knew. Eddie might be remembered for his jump shot but mostly he will be remembered for his upbeat attitude and smile through all the pain he had to endure. Through it all the George Family stuck together and I will miss Eddie and Gladys even more. Keep in touch Jimmy and good luck with your grandkids. Bruce and Pegi Dannelly

It was a great privilege to know Eddie and to have had the opportunity to play basketball with him on the Savannah High team. He made his teammates hustle a lot more, and as a result he made us winners. He was an inspiration to others all his life. He was a true champion, and we will miss him.

I have fond memories of Eddie, my next door neighbor for several years; the younger brother to Sally and Jimmy, he continued the family legacy for athletic excellence. The whole family was mild mannered, jovial and a joy.

- Don WOELTJEN, Fitzgerald, GA

I went to Savannah High with Eddie and always admired his athletic abilities....and his humbleness. He was always such a nice person and never let his achievements go to his head. God bless you, Eddie. My prayers for your family.
